Discover Magazine From Deep Pacific, Ugly and Tasty, With a Catch New York Times – William J. Broad – ?16 hours ago? The hoki, found in deep water. Like so many fish, it's spectacularly ugly. Not as ugly as the barreleyes or Frankenfish, but still pretty ugly. However, unlike the barreleyes, the hoki or blue grenadier, a fish found off the waters of New Zealand, is delicious. It is an ideal fish filet ingredient because it has more meat and it has no scales because it resides in the sunless depths of the Pacific. McDonald's branches all over the world rely on Hoki fish meat for their Filet-O-Fish sandwich.
