Neither Burnett nor Korman would speak with us. Burnett, in particular, seemed absolutely appalled and angry she had to share a room with such long-haired and rather scruffy-looking characters. That Hollywood has seen fit to make movies of Jake LaMotta and Rocky Graziano, but not of Sugar Ray Robinson (neé Walker Smith Jr.), is a mystery I cannot fathom. I also loved it because Wil Haygood's more than adequate prose brought He fought 202 bouts over a quarter of a century and defeated men like Jake LaMotta, Carmen Basilio, Rocky Graziano and Kid Gavilan. Pound for pound, the best boxer ever: that is how Robinson is often labeled by the purists.
